Vandals vrs Ghana Police : a year on...

A specially designed T-Shirt to mark the event
I will never forget the events of 13th April, 2013. I can’t afford to ever forget the happenings of that day and the valuable life lessons I learnt.  The occasion was the 55th Commonwealth Hall week, and as usual a mega float was to kick start the week celebration. It is worth noting, that for generations the fact that the MEGA FLOAT had stood out as the flagship event of the Vandal week celebration cannot be over emphasized. It is therefore not uncommon to see OLD Vandals trooping back into the palace of Father Bachus the morning of every MEGA FLOAT. Some even choose to report the night before. The float is usually patronized massively by students from our colonies (other small Halls, especially Mensah Sarbah Hall). Every year’s float is christened accordingly to add spice, class and some ‘touch’ to the procession. The most topical and usually controversial issue dominating National discourse usually becomes the code ‘name’ of the MEGA FLOAT. This is a fact known to every serious brain on UG campus. The choice of name, no matter how explosive or ridiculous it sounds to the ‘ordinary’ mind , MUST NOT be a surprise to any VANDAL, whether OLD or current at all ( I will explain why I added both OLD and CUURENT later). This year Vandals remembered that day by RELOADING the DUMSOR MEGA FLOAT, and added ‘KWASIA BI NTI’ accordingly to it. I want to take a retrospective journey back to events of that day and also ‘talk my mind on some of the issues’.
In following tradition, the daily dose of ECG’s shameful blackouts was at a high point then, so the 13th April MEGA FLOAT was accordingly named ‘THE DUMSOR DUMSOR MEGA FLOAT’. Hmmm…!! The drama started with a news report on Joy FM’S Mid-day news, when they opted to visit the usual dose of unconfirmed speculative journalism on gentlemen of the RED fraternity. On hearing ‘Students of Commonwealth Hall embarking on a Demo?’ as part of their Headline stories, I quickly phoned their newsroom to impress on them to correct the anomaly. My call was connected and reconnected to about five different people, until I was told the story won’t be used as a main news story since in their words ‘it was a developing story’. After explaining everything, all I got from the supposed ‘news editor’ who chose not to give me her name was ‘am sorry, but we will send our reporter there, to verify so that we correct it during our subsequent news bulletins’. She told me their ‘sources in Legon won’t lie to them, so she is sorry she cannot take my explanations until their ‘sources’ tell them otherwise. I called the president of the JCR and gave him the newsroom line for him to further clarify. They read out the same ‘prepared scripts’ they gave me to him. Very very reckless and irresponsible journalism.

I dashed back to campus to meet water cannons and armored vehicles, flanked by over 200 well armed police men. Their mission?  They have been instructed to make sure the Vandals Demo doesn’t happen. Absolute rubbish! The same police, led by the regional commander days ahead had been served with the notice of the float, and they agreed and approved the route with the students.  It is worth stating that the regional command had struck up an epistolary friendship with the JCR as part of the planning for the float. In the end the students who refused to mortgage their rights to some ‘BIG MAN’ somewhere who chose to convert his mobile phones into remote controls for Ghana Police, were beaten mercilessly. I don’t support any form of disregard of  law and order. I admire and appreciate the work of every man in uniform who works to make this country a better and safe place (Of course my admiration excludes the unscrupulous and zombie minded officers who cannot tell politicians in the face to leave them alone to do their work), but I was very happy when upon reaching the  Airport police station I saw a couple of police men treating their wounds as well. At least  brave Vandals made them feel how those they lawlessly manhandle daily feel. Fast forward, Edmond Kombat as SRC prez guaranteed n bailed the illegally detained Vandals.

Now my observation ( please stop reading if you don’t agree with me). Was sand in the head of the Joy FM ‘source’, or they were on their usual ‘let me put it out because it is newsworthy, and apologise later’ style of Ghanaian journalism? Did Ghana police waste resources to move at the speed of light to Legon based on the Joy FM report or they were truly ORDERED by some powers from above? Did this obviously confused BIG MAN order the regional command based on some serious security intelligence or he/she also relied on the Joy Fm report? We have a problem paaa oh! A year down the lane, not a simple apology has been heard from either the Ghana Police service or JOY FM. In all this however, my greatest disappointment is at the posture of the Old Vandals Association (OVA) during and after the attack by Ghana Police. Nobody expected the University management to release any statement to condemn the brutal and uncivilized attitude of the police, come on it is Vandals we talking about. They will pop champagne at Sarbah Logia n laugh! But OVA! OVA even though knew the police was wrong, have since that day been blaming junior members of the Hall for that attack. Their reason? “Well, u guys should change the way you do some of your things”. “You should have just called off the Float and stayed on campus, since the National security related issues were concerned”. My Volta ladies will say ‘LIKE SERIOUSLY???!!”

It is pretty obvious that we have to change how the Hall does some of its things. Practices which have been religiously preserved for ages cannot be altered overnight? Isn’t it our duty as Old Vandals and seniors to train junior members of that great Hall on how to ‘operate’? This hypocritical attitude of blowing conditional ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ air when it suits us for face saving purposes is unsustainable in the long term. I can’t end without saluting the Chief Vandal and his able outfits who stood their ground placidly and made sure they didn’t return to the CITY without their sons. Before throwing my hands into hopeless despair, let me resort to prayers, since I still believe in it. I pray for the day a police commander will resign worthily and tell Ghanaians he did that because of the interference from some BIG MAN. I pray for the day, our media houses will quit the polarization and sensationalism and release stories they have confirmed only. I pray also for the day OVA gets conscious leadership; the kind of leadership who will appreciate that kingdoms built through years of conquests cannot be ‘crumbled’ suddenly. What we have now is just a group of shindig fanatics , certainly not old Vandals. A big shame to everyone who had a hand in this brazen act, especially Old Vandals like DCOP Freeman Tettey who threw away the TRUTH he learnt in the Vandal City and chose to do the Zombie dance to supposed big men. Let me drop my pen before I say things I will regret later. In this Tweaa era, who knows who is recording me. See me in chambers if you want to know the role Mary Nkrumah played and the BIG MAN who came to pick me on campus played that day. Okyena nko!

VIEWS FROM MY SICK BED…

‘Challey dis slogan isn’t catchy enough but  I dnt wona be the one deciding that so pls consult ur guys n let’s see if we can get something better’ , I told him. Two days after he returned to tell me, ‘boss I think I’llstill go with that ooh. The team seems to like it’. I shook my head n said, Aaaah well. Then so it is. After all what is in a slogan? I heard church leaders tell us the year before that a certain Edmond Kombat whom they knew as a devoted Christian might incur the wrath of God and Christians on campus forgoing with ‘Ur Mind 4 Dey’. In the end we broke all electoral records in dat year’s elections. Hehehehehe, funny isn’t it? Did the Christians the men of God referred to vote on Election Day? Even their God they spoke for, was He on leave on Election Day? I leave those preachers to Dr Tony Aidoo. hehehe lol. Fast forward, we worked with the slogan my brother chose. I knew Edem’s dedication and humility was ‘whatz  gona’ do the trick, NOT some slogan. I have never believed in slogans in electioneering as a matter of principle. I always plan, execute n take the consequences in good faith. That dedication and humility, he has more than proved over this short period of official recklessness and insensitivity.
Eric Edem Agbana, made sure I didn’t enjoy the later part of my vac. The night we prepared the petition to parliament was when I saw how dedicated we can be as a people. Whiles ‘sleeptyping’, I sternly watched how tired Sandra was (she was discharged from the hospital a day earlier), I wonder how Prosper got his brains sharp at that time of the day,how Horlali punched holes in our points before we took them out was amazing, and oh my God how can I forget Duke? Mr. President, I respected u more that night.U see why I told u JCR prez is too small for u? The Grasag team led by Ernest was also on point with their contribution. P Kay’s pure water that night reminded me that Socialism lives on. lol Kwame raised the most important point of the night. Edjabeng did more than what a Chief of staff should do. Sir Alex Biney was fantastic with his contribution, Great Nanigbe will be proud of you. Hehehe. Juliet, Joshua, Dorothy n the rest whose names I don’t even know, kudos for your good work! After the coalition of all views and the submission of all sheets of papers to me, I nearly wept when Edem told me. ‘Nii I beg can we continue dis morrow? I can’t even think straight, I no bed since yesterday ooh.’ I told him my brother dnt worry, I’l go home  (it was approximately 2:13 am by my Indian watch, thx to Mary Nkrumah). Why not sleep on campus Nii, Mustafa asked? I told him don’t worry, I’ll return by 8am so we finish this paper and submit it to parliament before 11am. The above simply depicts what happened in just a night out of the over four weeks of to and fro jostling and meetings. Above all I thank God we achieved ALL the reliefs we sought. If for nothing at all our we succeeded in reminding our ‘honourable MPs’ that we queued in the scorching sun to offer them employment not only to go play politics with every issue in the house, but to be responsible when it comes to our socio economic welfare. Funny enough the idea of petitioning parliament was first mooted by Micheal, and we all brushed it off because we had absolutely no hope in our own parliament, can U imagine? Anyway, me I know where Mike had his inspiration from; I’ll send my appreciation personally to her later.
In the minds of perpetual critics and insatiable cowards nothing is enough. Forgetting that, we could probably have achieved a little more if they had come on board to chip in one contribution or the other. Anyway some say facebook activism is also activism, lol. Even though comments I read from some of this latter day all knowing saints make me cry within. A lot of ignorance is released under the guise of articles and status updates. To those people go ask Biano why he once said ‘I pray everyone lead one day’. The least we can support our leaders with is appreciation, and that doesn’t include praising them. It’s a matter of conviction and responsibility.
Whiles this was all ongoing, I paused to attempt to understand what spurred Mustafa on. The haste with which he agreed to sign up to the lawsuit was surprising.  He agreed at a time we had not even decided on which portion of our ‘truck load’ of problems we should send to court. Mustafa you have proven that u feel for the ordinary man even though you are not as ordinary as my wretched self. I run out of steam n broke down along the line but K rich, Mustafa n the rest of the team still worked on.  Honestly, I thought this level of dedication ended when Edmond handed over. I was wrong, but hey guys, if we continue with this attitude we can make this country a paradise.  I will release my views on the case, and Hon Agyarko’s reception in parliament later for obvious reasons. I will in that piece give an account of what I know about the loan and how untruthful those who are supposed to train us to be responsible citizens one day have been. I will end that by providing basic guidelines I think future student leaders who want to make a mark MUST live by. I mean student leaders NOT student politicians oh. Because funny enough, the University Management thrives on one simple si ne quanon for the perpetration of such policies, and that is a confused student front (Das All – in the voice of Samini in Adult Music). For now the two students in court deserve our support. It was NOT an easy decision. Aaaba! I just realized I was talking aboutslogans, hmm asem oh! Anyway my views on slogans in elections have beentwitched a little bit. The ‘GET VIM GET INVOLVED’ slogan has become clearer tome now. It has bred a host of selfless Advocates who would not sit down unconcernedfor injustice to thrive no matter the circumstance. Individuals who researchand provide VIABLE alternatives. Not noise makers and reckless rubble rousers. After all noisemaking ALWAYS yield nothing. I will start my article soon, allyou’ve been reading is my heading, and don’t dare say Tweaaa cus u no be my coequal!  Anyway, I shall return

MY COMRADE

In this dumpy but eventful life
Even as we aim for the skies, while we strife
We encounter friends and adversaries
Same manner do we engage supposed allies
But real ones stay wither life takes us
They stick no matter the circumstances
Their helping hand is stretched forth even before the cry for help comes
The kind of friends you share your moments with
Secrets you don't trust yourself with
are the ones you confide in him with
False friends are like our shadow, keeping close to us in times of light n bliss
But abandoning us when we face any form of shade, haze and mist
A great friend who argues with you
When all the rest agree unconditionally with you
That person is MY COMRADE
Chose yours wisely and quickly
But forget not, that one who looks for a friend without faults
Will have NONE...!!!
(Dedicated to Edmond Kombat on his birthday)

Happy New Year

2013 , unlike the glowing testimonies i have been reading from friends, I can safely say was the worse
year ever for me. It was rough. In fact I took the most difficult decisions ever, and hurt other people like I
never imagined. Close friends sometimes got me wondering if it was worth smiling back to any new person at all. i entered 2014 with so much regret. Regrets about words i have uttered and actions I have taken.
But hey, my God does not give you a load u cannot carry (that I am certain of). After all Isaiah 41:10 tells me 'Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.'
I have therefore put everything aside; the pain , the betrayal, the disrespect, frustrations and disappointments. I step into 2014 with SMILES. Genuine ones, not the type I received mostly in 2013. I therefore pray for forgiveness from every toe i have stepped on. I will strive to as much as possible do that less. To ma friends and family who kept faith in me, those who listened to me; I love you. Thank you very much, and I hope I repay all your trust and love with something of equal value (even though I knw there is NONE). And so I declare this year, my year of Dedication and Commitment.
My hymn for the year would be

"Rejoice, the Lord is King;
Your Lord and King adore!
Mortals, give thanks, and sing,
And triumph evermore:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!"

i chose this because I have decided to rejoice and give thanks to my Maker whether rough or smooth.
After all I know God is going to do me good this year, I pray He does same for you too. I love you.. Happy New Year
